Chapter Nine

“So,” Drake said through the loudspeaker on my phone, “you know we said we’d help?”

“Yessss…” My reply was less than enthusiastic.

Malone and I were sitting on the small veranda of the cabin, enjoying an evening coffee. We’d spent the day hanging out with the pack, making sure they were doing okay after what had happened. It had been nice to relax and get to know people more.

“We worked with Manual and Henry to round up the stray wolves you spoke to. They also reached out to a few and managed to recruit a healthy number.”

“You did?” Malone’s tone seemed wary.

I understood. He was the alpha, always in charge, so he had to know everything. He would either be pissed that they went behind his back or pleased that they’d taken a job off his hands. With the current raised eyebrows, I couldn’t tell which one it was yet.

“Yes. And they’re all heading to the South Downs meeting point, ready to do the ritual.”

“They are?” Malone’s voice was clipped as he sat forward in his seat.

Goosebumps broke out on my skin, lifting the hairs on my arm. We had dreamt of expanding the pack, but I never thought it would happen so quickly.

“I’m sorry we’ve not given you much warning, but a couple of them were enthusiastic and didn’t want to wait. Oh… hang on…” A muffled voice in the background began berating Drake. “… I’m supposed to be asking Malone if he’d like to do the ritual tonight. If not, we’ll tell them to bugger off until a more convenient time.”

Shaking his head, Malone got to his feet. “No, it’s fine, we’ll go now.”

“Great!” Drake sounded more excited than he should for a witch.

It was sweet how he wanted to be involved with the wolves. He sometimes visited the camp, but usually in the middle of the day when most of them were out at work. I was always on edge when he turned up, worrying whether one of the wolves would take grievance with a witch coming into their home. Luckily, so far, everyone had accepted him. Saving the alpha’s life had given him a free pass.

“We’ll be there soon,” I said, hanging up before my brother could embarrass me.

Malone grunted as he took our glasses back inside the cabin. I followed him, a tinge of excitement slipping down my spine. I had never seen a wolf ritual before. I’d seen plenty of witch ones, when I could be bothered to go to them. However, it would be fun to see how Malone welcomed wolves into his pack.

“Do we need anything?” I asked, following him inside.

Shaking his head, he plonked the glasses in the dishwasher before turning to face me. “No, just me, myself and I.”

“And a little witch-hybrid?”

Inclining his head, he chuckled. “Of course. It’ll be good for you to learn our ways.”

Smiling, I trotted over to him and offered my hand. “Shall we?”

The corner of his lip lifted into his cheek. “Oh, no. We do this the traditional way.
